Hey! My name is Oliver Van Aken (he/him). I am currently in my second year majoring in Economics and minoring in Sustainable Business. I am originally from Las Vegas, Nevada, but Eugene has become my home over the past few years. In my free time, I like to rock climb, hammock by the river, and plan my next backpacking trip!

What are the three key issues that you've noticed on campus and hope to improve for students as an elected official? Please list each issue and briefly explain how you hope to improve it.

Increase Transparency: Various student organizations have indicated they need help understanding ASUO's financial and election policies. I plan to bridge the information gap between ASUO and student organizations through creative marketing initiatives and consistent communication. Equitable Finances: The current ASUO Stipend Model doesn’t consider the unique challenges cultural organizations and affinity groups face on campus. I intend to continue working on the ASUO Stipend Equity Committee to ensure equitable financial decisions for these organizations. Improve Campus Relations: There has been an apparent disconnect between student concerns and university faculty, whether the board of trustees or a professor. I will provide more opportunities for students to voice their academic or economic concerns to faculty without fear of intimidation or faculty disregard for their message.

Why are you running?

My prior experience as an ASUO Financial Officer has given me valuable insight into the I-Fee Budgeting Process; I intend to utilize my experience within the Senate to best serve my fellow students financially. Additionally, I’ve experienced the unique problems faced by students represented under Academic Seat 14. After witnessing these hardships myself, I am eager to help solve issues from a more holistic approach.
