Why are you running in the ASUO Elections?
Hi, I am Amira Mitchell(she/her) and I am running for Student Senate Seat 05 with the Contracts Finance Committee! I’ve lived in Beaverton, Oregon for the past 8 years and I am currently a first-year student here at UO. I am majoring in both Public Relations and Political Science, minoring in Legal Studies, with the aspiration of obtaining a Juris Doctorate degree post-graduation. As someone who utilizes various resources across campus, I am very passionate about making students aware of all of the amazing support systems available to them. I ultimately want to become an ASUO officer to provide students with as much support as I can to genuinely make their experience at UO amazing, and their transition into this new chapter of their lives as seamless as possible. As a part of the Contracts Finance Committee, I would aim to continue the funding of the essential programs on campus that allow students to be supported in essential arenas such as transportation, legal services, and child care.
Is there a particular ASUO funded service or organization (or multiple) that you are passionate about and hope to work with? Why?
One of the ASUO-funded services I am particularly passionate about is Student Legal Services. As a Political Science and Public Relations major, minoring in Legal Studies, I recognize how vital accessible legal resources are for students navigating leases, contracts, tickets, and other legal matters. Many students, especially those living on their own for the first time, may not fully understand their rights, and this program provides free and essential guidance that can assist students in their legal challenges and avoid any costly mistakes. Additionally, I support the funding of LTD Transit Passes considering how crucial reliable and affordable transportation is for students living off-campus, are employed, or need to commute for various reasons. By ensuring the continued funding for this program, we can aid in reducing potential financial barriers and make sure students have the resources they need to access campus and the broader Eugene area. Lastly, I am passionate about the advocacy opportunities funded by ASUO, such as OSPIRG and the Oregon Student Association which give students a platform to amplify their voices and advocate for change on issues that impact them directly. If elected, I would work to ensure these programs remain available and accessible to all students.
