Tell us about yourself.
My name is Benni Howard (she/her), and I’m a 1st year student from Kirkland, WA double majoring in (Pre)-Public Planning, Policy and Management and Political Science with a minor in Legal Studies.
What are the three key issues that you've noticed on campus that you hope to improve for students as an elected official?
Please list each issue and briefly explain how you hope to improve it.
I’ve noticed a lack of resources for health care (especially mental health), suffering student engagement outside of sports, and unsustainable university policies. I plan to address lacking health care resources by working with University Health Services and committees to build upon existing programs, as well as develop new resources. I will combat low student engagement by striving for transparency and accessibility of student-run orgs, especially ASUO. I will promote campus-wide environmental sustainability by prioritizing building strong relationships between ASUO Senate and environmental, racial, and social justice oriented organizations and advocating for eco-friendly policies.
Why are you running?
As an ASUO Winter Intern, I have seen what works and what doesn’t. While interning, I developed a project around mental health and came away from the project feeling extremely fulfilled having temporarily filled a gap in university resources. However, I want to build permanent resources. Seat 16 (design, music, dance) represents many majors and needs, and I plan to reach out so I can understand and satisfy those various needs.
