Why are you running in the ASUO Elections?

My name is David Eaton (he/him). I'm a second year student from Portland, Oregon, double majoring in political science and accounting. I'm excited to be running for the Departments Finance Committee seat (at large 01) so that I can make a positive impact on the university. I strongly believe in individual ability to create change, and last fall I helped campaign for a local democratic congresswoman, bolstering my passion for public service and advocacy. My number one priority as a committee member will be to prioritize listening to all student voices, so that I can make accurate and fair decisions about how student funds are spent. One of the main complaints students have about student government is that they don't feel represented. I aim to prevent this by being receptive to the opinions of students so that I can understand where they are coming from and what they need. Student government has also been criticized for not being transparent with students. I will make it very clear how student funds are being spent, so that they are able to push back when necessary.

Is there a particular ASUO funded service or organization (or multiple) that you are passionate about and hope to work with? Why?

One of the services I am passionate about working with will be the Accessible Education Center. For a public university, it is extremely important that all students have the opportunity to receive a quality education, and that their individual needs are being met. Investing in the Accessible Education Center is one of the best uses of university funds because it helps provide access to education that students with disabilities wouldn’t have otherwise. Services such as assistive technology and testing accommodations play a key role in supporting students. Improving the AEC improves accessibility and inclusivity for all students. Duck Rides is another key program I want to support as it benefits students in a variety of ways. Walking home at night comes with a lot of risk, and Duck Rides provides a reliable method of transportation to avoid this. This helps reduce student stress and improves campus safety. Duck rides are a subsidized service which makes safe transportation available for all students, as not all students can afford to pay for an Uber. Currently, Duck rides are only offered up until 12 AM, but with increased funding Duck Rides could be offered later into the night, helping students get home safe.
