Why are you running in the ASUO Elections?

Hello, my name is Derian (He/Him) and I’m from Denver, Colorado. I’m currently a junior majoring in Accounting. I’m excited to be running for Senate Seat 4 as a part of the Program Finance Committee. I believe that addressing policies and problems can help change students' experiences for the better, all while creating opportunities for UO to progress. I want to understand the big picture and hear everyone’s voices from the community to make practical decisions. Most importantly, I want everyone to know that they are seen and that their voices shouldn’t be silenced. In my free time, I enjoy reading classic literature and have recently begun learning how to DJ.

As one of the most front facing parts of ASUO, how do you plan on making these interactions as positive as possible for students?

To ensure interactions with students are as positive as possible, I will prioritize accessibility and transparency. I want everyone to feel comfortable approaching ASUO, knowing they’ll be respected and heard. Whether through regular office hours, campus events, or casual conversations, I will make certain that communication channels are clear and inviting. It’s also important to me that everyone is on the same page, so I will strive to help students understand how ASUO decisions affect them by presenting straightforward, easy-to-follow updates. No one should ever feel left out of the loop. Most importantly, each meeting will be sincere; whether someone is feeling frustrated, seeking support, or simply asking a question, I will take the time to listen and understand their perspective. Being heard is just as crucial as finding a solution, and I want every student to feel acknowledged and supported during their interactions with me and with ASUO. I want everyone to know that I’m someone who genuinely cares about their experience and will ensure that their voices are heard.

Is there a particular ASUO funded service or organization (or multiple) that you are passionate about and hope to work with? Why?

One ASUO funded organization I’m passionate about supporting is Women in Business (WIB). This group plays a vital role in empowering women by providing mentorship, networking opportunities, and professional development resources. In traditionally male-dominated fields, WIB fosters confidence, creates connections, and promotes gender equity in the workplace. I am eager to collaborate with them to expand their reach and impact. I would advocate for additional funding to support more workshops, guest speakers, and networking events. I understand how important it is to develop negotiation skills, leadership development, and personal branding, which are essential in the workplace. Growing up in a female-dominated household, I’ve seen firsthand the strength, resilience, and leadership that women bring to the table. I admire their mission for empowerment, which is why I want to help reinforce their mission so that more students feel confident in pursuing leadership roles.
