Why are you running in the ASUO Election?

Hi everyone! My name is Fabliha Maliyat (she/her), and I’m a first year studying Human Physiology and Neuroscience with minors in Chemistry and Global Health. I am passionate about health and educational equity and making sure all students have access to the resources and opportunities they need to succeed. On campus, I intern with Moss Street Children’s Center, the UO Alumni Association, and the Muslim Student Association, while also being involved in research and our pre-med student organizations. I’m running for PFC Seat 4 because I’ve seen how access to funding and support shapes which communities are able to grow, organize, and be heard. Student organizations are often where people share spaces for belonging and advocacy, yet the funding they rely on does not always reflect what is needed to sustain their work. The systems we have today exist because students spoke up, organized, and demanded better, and that same momentum continues through the organizations shaping our campus now. On PFC, I will work to ensure funding decisions are transparent and grounded in what students are building. Together, we can create a campus where our organizations can grow and lead meaningful change. Vote UOSP!

As one of the most front facing parts of ASUO, how do you plan on making these interactions as positive as possible for students?

As a senator, I understand that weekly Senate Hearings and funding discussions with student organizations are often students’ first experience engaging with ASUO. My goal is to make those interactions clear, respectful, and easy to navigate. I will approach each hearing by listening carefully to organizations’ goals and the work they are doing, ensuring their requests are fully understood before decisions are made. Many groups are navigating funding processes for the first time, while others are returning with prior experience, so I will clearly communicate expectations, timelines, and outcomes so all organizations have a consistent understanding of how decisions are made. As a liaison between student organizations and ASUO, I will work to reduce barriers in preparing for hearings and presenting requests, while creating an environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and advocating for their needs. By communicating openly and explaining decisions in a straightforward way, I want organizations to leave hearings with clarity and confidence in how to move forward.
