Why are you running in the ASUO Elections?
Hey, I am Halo Sanchez (he/him), and I am a sophomore looking to major in business administration with a concentration in finance. I was born in Guadalajara, a big city in Mexico, and lived there for eight years before I moved to Portland, Oregon. One of my biggest focuses in running for ASUO elections is inclusivity, as well as making sure every student from all backgrounds is acknowledged and supported by our actions. Student government is an excellent opportunity to support peer students. By representing other peers, I can make sure that clubs, student groups, and the student body as a whole are aware of the resources we are able to provide and support. Transparency and safety are also key factors that I wish to convey while holding a position in ASUO. Oftentimes, contacting student governments or other people with questions can be intimidating. I hope to build healthy and safe relationships with students to show that anyone can reach out in a comfortable way.
Is there a particular ASUO funded service or organization (or multiple) that you are passionate about and hope to work with? Why?
Services and organizations like the Accessible Education Center Disabilities Services Project, Multicultural Center, and Basic Needs Program are ASUO-funded services that I am passionate about working with. I believe these organizations provide support that reaches students from various backgrounds and needs. These are essential resources that also act as inclusive spaces where students can feel seen, heard, and supported throughout college. Inclusivity and equity are values that I grew to deeply care about when I moved to the United States from Mexico at the age of eight years old. I learned how important it was for students' voices to be uplifted and supported. Promoting awareness of these resources is key, and I hope to retain and endure the impact these organizations hold by continuing to fund them. Being part of ASUO would give me a chance to actively collaborate with these services, listen to what they need, and advocate for their goals. I believe this work is essential in creating a campus environment where every student, regardless of their circumstances, can find success. I am running because I believe this is a great opportunity to acknowledge and help students with all types of backgrounds find resources that are specific to them.
