Why are you running in the ASUO Elections?

Hi! My name is Karen Glynn (she/her) and I am a current sophomore studying psychology and criminology with a bachelors of science focus. I am from Manhattan Beach, California which is about twenty to thirty minutes away from downtown LA proper! I am running for ASUO senate because I believe in providing support to the student body and want to expand the ASUO's accessibility and outreach across all departments, with a special focus on psychology. The job of ASUO is to support students, foster diversity, and make decisions for the benefit of all students. As someone who has not participated with or heard much about ASUO and how it could benefit me, in my role I would work to change that with the hope that more students will utilize ASUO resources. I am excited to get involved and work with other senate members to foster an accepting, transparent community where students feel comfortable to come communicate with us. I hope to work with all of you in the student body, and other ASUO members to create an environment that listens to students and advocates for them, with their best interests in mind.

As one of the most front facing parts of ASUO, how do you plan on making these interactions as positive as possible for students?

On the senate I want to make students feel comfortable to speak to us and I would want to lead with kindness first and foremost. I want to make sure that everyone who comes and speaks to us feels heard, and would go out of my way to make sure that happens. It is important to me that I know and listen to the people I am representing and as a member of the senate I would truly take the time to listen and prioritize student's needs in my decisions. I hope to be someone students feel comfortable around and in that way will be able to communicate efficiently with students and other members of the senate.

How are you connected to the academic programs you represent? How will you utilize these connections to best represent students?

As a psychology student, I know the discipline is diverse in interests, programs, and people and knowing this I would want to use my position to support different student directives within the department. Interacting with fellow psychology students and faculty has given me an understanding of what the department needs and how it could better prioritize students. I would use this knowledge to ensure that no psychology student feels unrepresented in decisions being made, and programs available to them. In this role I hope to continue to foster the diversity that exists within this department, and I am so excited to get involved with an opportunity where I can make a positive change.
