Why are you running in the ASUO Elections?

My name is Kiasia Baggenstos (she/her), and I’m a junior public relations major from Portland, Oregon. I’m running for Senate Seat 18—Journalism Undergraduate—to act as a change-maker for SOJC students. As an Account Supervisor at Allen Hall PR and a board member on the SOJC Dean’s Advisory Board, I’m deeply involved in the growth and opportunity within our School. We are communicators, journalists and storytellers— our education should prepare us for the evolving industries we’re entering. I aim to strengthen connections between SOJC students and ASUO, ensuring our needs are heard and addressed. I will advocate for professional development opportunities, stronger student support and transparent communication between the School and ASUO. I plan to establish a student-led DEI Committee within the School to ensure that diversity, equity and inclusion remain prioritized under change. I am committed to listening, collaborating and turning student concerns into action.

As one of the most front facing parts of ASUO, how do you plan on making these interactions as positive as possible for students?

As a Public Relations major and an Account Supervisor at Allen Hall PR, I understand the importance of clear, respectful communication. If elected, I will approach Senate Hearings with professionalism and empathy, ensuring that student organizations feel supported and heard. I plan to establish consistent, open dialogue by actively listening to each organization’s needs and providing transparent feedback on funding decisions. I would want to work to help make ASUO more accessible by simplifying the funding request process and increasing communication about available resources. My experience on the SOJC Dean’s Advisory Board has taught me the value of collaboration, and I will bring that mindset to Senate by encouraging cross-campus partnerships and fostering stronger connections between ASUO and student groups. Additionally, I aim to be proactive by meeting with student organizations outside of hearings to understand their goals and challenges better. This will help build trust and ensure that decisions reflect student interests. My commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion will guide my approach, ensuring that all voices—especially those from underrepresented communities—are valued. I am dedicated to creating a positive and productive environment where every student organization feels supported and empowered.

How are you connected to the academic programs you represent? How will you utilize these connections to best represent students?

As a Public Relations major and an Account Supervisor at Allen Hall PR, I am deeply involved in the academic programs within the School of Journalism and Communication (SOJC). My work at Allen Hall PR has given me hands-on experience in strategic communication and leadership, preparing me to understand the needs of students pursuing similar career paths. Additionally, serving on the SOJC Dean’s Advisory Board has allowed me to engage directly with faculty and administration, advocating for student interests and shaping the future of our programs. I plan to use these connections to ensure that SOJC students’ voices are heard at the academic and administrative levels. By maintaining open communication with student groups, professors and the Dean’s Office, I will advocate for increased professional development opportunities, stronger student support systems and enhanced career readiness programs. I also aim to create a student-led DEI Committee within the SOJC to ensure that diversity, equity and inclusion remain a priority. My goal is to serve as a bridge between SOJC students and ASUO, making sure that the evolving needs of communicators, journalists and storytellers are addressed. I am committed to listening, collaborating and turning student feedback into meaningful action.
