Why are you running in the ASUO Election?

Hello! My name is Luke (He/Him), and I'm a 3rd-year business and Political Science Student from San Diego. I want to be a connection between ASUO and Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL). FSL isn't currently funded by ASUO, but with help towards administrative fees, we can expand our safety and wellness board, hire counselors for the IFC and Multicultural Fraternities and Sororities, and overall strengthen our largest student org on campus. We're currently self-funded and understaffed, and being at full capacity would benefit our 3500+ members, those looking to join like incoming freshmen, improve accountability and safety measures, provide support on effective fundraising for Philo, etc. I'm currently on the IFC as VP of Membership Experience, and my role is community building between councils. That's exactly what I'm looking to do across campus here at the UO, strengthening our departments so they can best serve us students!

Is there a particular ASUO funded service or organization (or multiple) that you are passionate about and hope to work with? Why?

Outside of FSL, I'm particularly interested in affordable childcare. I've researched the topic extensively and group-written a grant for an affordable childcare center in Eugene. The truth is - it's impossible to afford. For a single parent of one child at the very low-income threshold, after-school care at the YMCA would consume nearly 14% of their annual income. I'm all about the numbers when it comes to budgeting effectively and to what's right - and childcare sits at the top priority of an underfunded public good. This is a huge reason why I'm excited to represent UO Student Power as our policy goals align perfectly on this issue.
