Tell us about yourself.
My name is María Soto Cuesta (she/her) and I am a Sophomore and international student from Caracas, Venezuela. I am studying Biochemistry and Bioengineering. I have a cat named Percy Jackson. I am passionate about uplifting other international students and continuing to do good work at UO, and I believe being the next Vice-President of ASUO is the platform to do so.
What are the three key issues that you've noticed on campus that you hope to improve for students as an elected official?
1. Amplifying Basic Needs Support: I’m dedicated to ensuring every student’s basic needs are met, from expanding food access to advocating for affordable textbooks and enhancing financial literacy. My goal is to remove barriers to academic success, allowing students to focus on learning, not surviving. 2. Cultivating an Inclusive Campus Culture: I'll work to increase representation across campus boards, improve resources for international and domestic students, and ensure a safe, welcoming environment for all. Fostering a deep sense of belonging for every member of the flock is essential for our university community. 3. Enhancing ASUO Engagement: I'll lead reforms for clearer, more engaging student government structures by demystifying ASUO's work and decisions, and growing transparency to foster a campus culture where every Duck feels seen
Why are you running?
As Senate Seat 04, Latinx Arc RA, and MECHA Finance Director, my journey from a lost international student starting from scratch in a new country, to getting involved and finding my community, fuels my drive for inclusive change at UO. I understand the challenges of finding your place. I'm committed to building community and support. I aim to bridge gaps and ensure every voice is heard, fostering a university where everyone feels valued and connected.
