Tell us about yourself.
I am Daniel Appiah Gyekye, a first-year graduate student, known affectionately as Banki to friends and family, a nod to my perceived leadership qualities akin to the former UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon. Currently, I am immersed in my Ph.D. journey in Journalism and Communication, while also actively engaged as a GTFF member and fulfilling the role of Steward for the School of Journalism and Communication.
What are the three key issues that you've noticed on campus that you hope to improve for students as an elected official? Please list each issue and briefly explain how you hope to improve it.
1. I am dedicated to amplifying the visibility of the student government by actively involving students, particularly organizational leaders, to ensure the student government works effectively to listen to their needs.
2. Leveraging my experience with GTFF, I will collaborate closely to address graduate student concerns like conference funding, research access, and international student challenges.
3. I also propose the 'UO Impact Challenge,' fostering collaboration between the student government and graduate school through real-world problem-solving opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students.
Why are you running?
As a former Purdue graduate senator, I led student initiatives and played a key role in contract negotiations with GTFF. My decision to run for this position reflects my dedication to advocating for student needs and enhancing the graduate student experience.
