Tell us about yourself.

Hi! I’m Mariam Hassan, a sophomore at the University of Oregon. My pronouns are she/her. I’m originally from Egypt and moved to the US at age 9. I major in psychology with minors in Arabic and legal studies, my goal is to be a lawyer and plan to attend law school post-graduation. I am heavily involved on campus; I captain a mock trial team and serve as events coordinator for the Muslim Student Association.

What are the three key issues that you've noticed on campus that you hope to improve for students as an elected official?
Please list each issue and briefly explain how you hope to improve it.

My slate and I have many issues we hope to address during our term! But among those we’ve prioritized three key issues in our election campaign. First, the Basic Needs Program requires restructuring for optimal use of resources. We aim to establish a permanent, well-stocked food pantry with extended hours and encourage ASUO members' involvement to bridge the gap between students and government. Second, addressing parking accessibility is imperative. We plan to collaborate with university and city authorities to mitigate the high ticketing rates and space shortages, possibly through a lottery system or ticket subsidies. Lastly, fostering a welcoming and inclusive ASUO culture demands improved communication channels between the student government and body, ensuring openness, honesty, and supportiveness.

Why are you running?

As an active member of our campus, I've noticed a disconnect among students, ASUO, and administration. Collaboration is crucial for a healthy environment, starting with inclusive representation that goes beyond demographics to encompass all aspects of campus life. I aim to advocate for comprehensive student representation, drawing on my leadership experience to ensure every voice is heard. I'll be a resource for all students, fostering a sense of value and representation across diverse backgrounds.
