Why are you running in the ASUO Elections?
Hey everyone! My name is Logan Fisher (They/Them), I'm a second-year linguistics and music double major from Salem, OR. I am running for CAS chair 11 representing Linguistics majors and other social sciences, though I am heavily involved with athletic bands and other student organizations. During my time here, I have seen issues raised in student organizations and administration alike that could be solved with open communication facilitated by ASUO. Thus it is my hope that, if elected, I can help create more direct lines of communication between students and ASUO and create a warmer environment for everyone. Though it may be scary to speak up, your voice matters, and you deserve to be represented. Even when there is a lot of divide in the world and even on this campus, we need to work together as one united UO!
As one of the most front facing parts of ASUO, how do you plan on making these interactions as positive as possible for students?
What we have seen in ASUO in the past is that academic senators have been closed off to some student organizations and their financial needs, so my priority would be to have an open mindset and listen to all my fellow senators. Though my priority is to represent humanities majors, ASUO represents all students, and I would be remiss to not value the voices of my peers so we can make educated decisions that prioritize student safety and well-being above all else. Likewise while talking to student organizations, it is a huge opportunity for me to learn about the people that I am representing and serving. My time with you is not time for me to talk or convince you that I am a good senator. It is time for me to learn about you and your needs. My time to talk for you is on the senate floor, so I will use my valued time with you to listen to what you need from me as your senator.
How are you connected to the academic programs you represent? How will you utilize these connections to best represent students?
As an interdisciplinary student, I know the struggle that a lot of our students are going through first-hand. I am involved actively with many student organizations within the humanities department and outside of the department. Within humanities, I have co-authored a textbook (Learning How to Learn Languages) for LING 144 as Freshman, and I have presented my work at the linguistics colloquium, undergraduate research symposium, and online at the Open Education Conference in Providence, Rhode Island. I am also involved in the REPPS lab under Professor Rachel Weissler where I am very focused on second language acquisition and sociolinguistics work. I play the mellophone in the Oregon Marching Band, Oregon Basketball Band, and I have been a member of the Yellow Garter Band from 2023-2025 where I have also held leadership positions as the logistical director for the 2024-2025 school year. As you can presume, I connect with many students on a daily basis, and it would work to my benefit as an ASUO senator since I hold genuine dialogues with people from different walks of life every day. The people I interact with in my various programs represent the diversity that I love about this school.
