Why are you running in the ASUO Elections?
I am Alexander Perez (he/him) and I am junior studying finance here at UO, and I am also from Tempe, AZ! have decided to run for the ASUO election this year because I was hired for an at-large role on PFC. While I was initially satisfied with my contributions, I have since realized that my experience in this role has given me the opportunity to make a greater impact on campus. As a member of PFC, I have witnessed the positive effects of my work, particularly providing great resources and opportunities for multi cultural organizations by allocating their funds and assisting them in their budget processes. However, I believe that my experience on the senate seat would allow me to further contribute to the success of all organizations on campus. I am confident that my skills and experience would enable me to maintain the transparency and collaboration that are essential for the continued growth and development of the PFC. Outside of PFC, I want to use my position to advocate for Free speech and marginal groups on campus who feel they do not have the proper representation on campus, and I believe they should use ASUO as a resource to get as much as assistance as they need to enrich their experience on campus.
As one of the most front facing parts of ASUO, how do you plan on making these interactions as positive as possible for students?
As a candidate for a senate seat, I intend to make these interactions with students as positive as possible by not only creating the most respectful interactions, but also giving them my utmost attention and services, and ensuring that they receive the resources they deserve. From my experiences with other senators, there seems to be a lack of transparency between students and the senators, as well as between different branches. I believe that transparency is something that needs to be improved. I also want to make sure that I’m providing every resource I can for students so that they can get the experience they need, especially when I see students every day confused and unsure of the steps they need to take to solve their problems on campus and for their organizations. Additionally, I want to be a voice and bridge the gap between ASUO and students and for growing organizations that may not feel that they have the proper resources to thrive.
Is there a particular ASUO funded service or organization (or multiple) that you are passionate about and hope to work with? Why?
I am very passionate about multicultural organizations on campus because I joined many different organizations on campus and orgs that resonated with my culture made me feel at home and find a second family here at UO. Recognizing the impact they made on me, and working with many multicultural orgs on PFC, I have been able to experience they make on campus and how many students they serve in the community. I want to ensure they are getting the proper resources to continue to grow and maintain the impact they make to all students on campus.
